"Serving the American Council on Education, at this point in my career, is an extraordinary opportunity to draw on all that experience and to help advance these institutions that are both central to our nation's future and enriching to the students and communities that we serve," Broad said.

Broad was president of the UNC system from 1997 to 2006, a period when enrollment grew dramatically. Her achievements included a move to raise $3.1 billion through bonds to pay for new construction on the university campuses.
