Poland report says Russia to lift meat ban

WARSAW, Poland, Dec. 6 (UPI) -- Russia is likely to lift a ban on meat imports from Poland, and new Warsaw authorities may lift a veto on Moscow's talks with a world economic group.

The Polish daily Dziennik said Russia may open its market to Polish meat before Christmas, Polish Radio reported Thursday.

Polish Agriculture Minister Marek Sawicki is to visit Moscow next week to work out details of a meat trade agreement, Dziennik said.

Krzysztof Jazdzewski, deputy head of the Polish veterinary administration, claimed Russia insisted the two countries' officials should meet to discuss the meat issue as soon as possible.

Polish-Russian relations have been strained since 2005 when Moscow banned meat imports from Poland saying the products were reportedly of low quality.

In an apparent retaliation move, the former government of nationalist Prime Minister Jaroslaw Kaczynski in May blocked an invitation by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development to open membership talks with Russia.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, who took the office Nov. 16, has said his government will reverse the move by the former Kaczynski Cabinet.
