VP Cheney to undergo outpatient procedure

WASHINGTON, Nov. 26 (UPI) -- U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney reportedly was scheduled for an outpatient procedure to correct an irregular heartbeat.

During a doctor's visit for a lingering cough from a cold, Cheney's doctor found an irregular heart beat, or atrial fibrillation, CNN reported. Atrial fibrillation is an abnormal heart rhythm involving the upper chambers of the heart.

The vice president was scheduled to undergo the procedure to correct the irregularity at George Washington University hospital Monday afternoon and was expected to return to his residence during the evening.

Atrial fibrillation generally is not life-threatening but may result in palpitations, fainting, chest pain or congestive heart failure.

Cheney, 66, has a history of heart problems.
