U.N. relief envoy expelled from So. Darfur

KHARTOUM, Sudan, Nov. 8 (UPI) -- The head of the U.N. relief effort in Sudan has been expelled from South Darfur for objecting to the relocation of hundreds of women and children.

Sudanese officials accused Wael al-Haj Ibrahim, head of the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in the area, of violating "rules of humanitarian action," Human Rights Watch said.

U.N. officials said Ibrahim had been ordered to leave South Darfur, not the entire country, the Integrated Regional Information Network said.

"We are extremely concerned at the expulsion and meetings are going on at the highest levels with the government to resolve the issue," said Orla Clinton, the agency's public information officer in Khartoum.

About 200,000 people have been killed and hundreds of thousands more made homeless by the conflict in Darfur.
