Britain gives Annan knighthood

LONDON, Oct. 25 (UPI) -- Britain's Queen Elizabeth II has awarded an honorary knighthood to former U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan.

The knighthood was granted to the Nobel Peace Prize winner during a private audience at Buckingham Palace, IC Liverpool reported Wednesday.

The honorary Knight Grand Cross of the Order of St Michael and St George is awarded to men and women of high office, or those who render extraordinary non-military service in a foreign country. Annan, however, is not entitled to use the title "Sir" because he is not a British citizen, IC Liverpool said.
