Fiery explosion shakes apartment building

DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla., Sept. 21 (UPI) -- Eight residents and two firefighters were injured in a dramatic explosion Thursday in an apartment building in Deerfield Beach, Fla.

The early morning explosion at Deerfield East Apartments collapsed the roof on the three-story building and blew out most of the windows, The Miami Herald said.

"It's surprising ... that we didn't have any more serious injuries or fatalities," Deerfield Beach Fire Rescue spokesman Gary Fernaays told The South Florida Sun-Sentinel. "We were very fortunate. We're pretty positive we don't have any victims."

At least 100 of the building's 150 residents were displaced.

The Sun-Sentinel said officials were looking into propane as a possible cause. The Florida Bureau of Liquefied Petroleum Gas Inspection said it has no evidence yet that a propane leak caused the explosion, but said there have been reports that propane was stored in improper containers.
