Sources: Russian tycoon hiding in London

MOSCOW, Sept. 6 (UPI) -- Russian oil tycoon Mikhail Gutseriyev, who is wanted for tax evasion in Russia, is hiding out in London, sources alleged.

Sources said that the former head of the Russneft oil company avoided his legal troubles by fleeing Russia and is in London, where he is mourning the death of his son in a car accident last month, The Moscow Times reported Thursday.

"He is in London but has asked his friends to remain quiet during this difficult time," one source told the Times.

Gutseriyev resigned his position as the head of Russia's seventh-largest oil company on July 31 amidst a flurry of legal activity against the troubled firm.

On Aug. 28, a warrant for Gutseriyev's arrest was filed based on charges of tax evasion and illegal business practices.

The Times said the oil tycoon's lawyer attempted to have that warrant withdrawn on Wednesday but the Moscow City Court rejected the appeal.
