Report: Attractiveness helps in workplace

LONDON, Aug. 12 (UPI) -- Attractive people have a better chance of enjoying a lucrative and successful workplace career than their less attractive counterparts, a U.S. study found.

The study, published in the Journal of Economic Psychology, determined an employee's level of attractiveness did appear to play an integral role in their salaries and how they were received by their co-workers, The Mail on Sunday reported.

In their study, economists James Andreoni and Ragan Petrie said attractive people had salaries that were on average 9 percent higher than those of their moderately attractive co-workers.

Those attractive employees also benefited from being seen as helpful and cooperative by their co-workers in comparison to others.

"We find a beauty premium, even though beautiful people contribute, on average, no more or less than others," the pair said in their study.

"Relative beauty is rewarded. Attractive people make more money than middle attractive people, who in turn make more money than unattractive people."

The British newspaper said the pair also stated their findings were applicable to a wide variety of workplace settings.
