Giuliani leader in new GOP poll

NEW YORK, Aug. 10 (UPI) -- Former New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani led a poll of Republican presidential hopefuls released Friday.

The CNN/ Opinion Research Corp. poll showed Giuliani leading with the support of 29 percent of respondents.

Former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson, who has not entered the race, was in second place in the poll with 22 percent of respondents’ support, and Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., was third with 16 percent of those asked choosing him as their candidate, the poll said.

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney garnered 12 percent support in the latest CNN/Opinion Research poll.

The telephone poll of 357 registered voters who identified themselves as either registered Republicans or independents who leaned toward Republican, had a margin of error of plus or minus 5 percentage points. It was conducted Monday through Wednesday, CNN reported.
