Poland president plans election for spring

WARSAW, Poland, July 31 (UPI) -- Poland's president said he believes spring would be the best time for early elections as chances for the ruling coalition's survival are slim, media said.

Polish President Lech Kaczynski told Warsaw's Gazeta Wyborcza daily an early parliamentary election is inevitable, Polish Radio reported Tuesday. He said the spring would be the best in his view.

The next parliamentary elections, which must be at least every four years, are scheduled for 2009.

Kaczynski said the early election is necessary because two smaller coalition member parties cause havoc too often, the radio said.

Prime Minister Jaroslaw Kaczynski, Lech's twin brother, has stated on several occasions political disagreements between the parties in his ruling coalition are likely to lead to early elections, probably in September or November.

Earlier in July, Jaroslaw Kaczynski sacked Deputy Prime Minister Andrzej Lepper for alleged involvement in a corruption investigation. Lepper was agriculture minister and the leader of the populist Self Defense party.

In 2005 elections, the Kaczynski brothers' conservative Law and Justice party was the strongest in the parliament but did not win enough deputies to form the government on its own.
