Antiwar activists focus on Republicans

WASHINGTON, July 16 (UPI) -- Antiwar groups trying to drum up enough votes to force President Bush to pull U.S. troops out of Iraq are going after Republicans in Congress.

It may be just a coincidence but two days after Americans Against Escalation in Iraq launched a campaign in New Mexico, the state's GOP Sen. Pete Domenici announced his opposition to the president's war strategy, The Christian Science Monitor reported Monday.

Seven Senate Republicans, six of who are up for re-election in 2008, voted in favor of a proposal to mandate longer time at home for rotating U.S. forces last week.

If that measure had passed, it would have limited the Pentagon's ability to redeploy units to a war zone.

Tom Matzzie of MoveOn. Org Political Action predicts eventual victory for the antiwar movement.

"We're running a political campaign with a long horizon," Matzzie told the newspaper, adding that as their efforts gain momentum, more Republicans will break with President Bush.
