Inmate firefighter escapes

SAN RAFAEL, Calif., June 29 (UPI) -- A California prison inmate who escaped while fighting a wildfire can blame his bright orange prison pants for his short-lived freedom.

The Marin (Calif.) Independent Journal said a passerby called San Rafael, Calif., police after seeing Jamar Henry in the bushes. A police detective then found him hiding under a car in an alley.

Henry, 27, was charged Thursday with escaping while working outside a prison

The Independent Journal said California has thousands of prison inmates on firefighting crews. During fires, a crew boss counts inmates every 15 minutes.

"He was only gone for about 50 minutes before San Rafael police found him," Lt. Brett Moore, a fire crew supervisor for the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation., told the newspaper.

Moore said no violent felons are allowed on the firefighting crews. But the Independent Journal reported that Henry was convicted of robbery with a firearm.
