Ma Ying-jeou confident about Taiwan trial

TAIPEI, Taiwan, March 14 (UPI) -- Former Chinese Nationalist Party Chairman Ma Ying-jeou said this week he is confident that he will triumph in his upcoming corruption trial in Taiwan.

Speaking about his April 3 trial on corruption charges, the former KMT head confirmed he remained confident that he would be vindicated in relation to his alleged embezzlement, the Taipei Times said.

"I am confident of my innocence. I've handled my mayoral allowance according to government regulations and this prosecution is therefore unfair. I will definitely appear in court to defend myself," he said.

Ma was indicted on Feb. 13 for allegedly embezzling $333,333 into a personal bank account, despite having reported the funds to the government.

Prosecutors in the case have remained more concerned with why Ma had kept the money in a personal account rather then allowing them to remain public funds.

The paper said that on Monday, the similar corruption case against Democratic Progressive Party member Hsu Tain-tsair was dropped after prosecutors chose not to indict him.
