West Australia braces for 2nd cyclone

PORT HEDLAND, Australia, March 10 (UPI) -- A second cyclone is bearing down on already-battered communities in the southwest region of Western Australia.

The first storm, cyclone George, was moving inland after crossing the coastline south of Port Hedland Friday. Winds of up to 170-mph ripped through a mining camp killing one person and injuring 30 others.

The Bureau of Meteorology says some areas in the Pilbara region may still experience winds of up to 70 mph accompanied by rainfall of up to four inches.

Meanwhile a second cyclone, named Jacob, was about 400 miles off the Western Australia coast, traveling on roughly the same path taken by George. Weather forecasters predict it will make landfall south of Port Hedland on Sunday.

Many residents in Port Hedland were without power and water supplies as emergency crews worked through the night braving strong winds and heavy rain.
