Powerful storm hits Mozambique

MAPUTO, Mozambique, Feb. 22 (UPI) -- A powerful tropical hurricane hit Mozambique Thursday, threatening dangerous rains in a country already hit by severe flooding.

Cyclone Favio's winds were as high as 130 mph, the BBC reported. Trees were overturned and houses blown down.

Favio came ashore in Inhambane province on the Indian Ocean coast. While the storm was expected to become weaker over land, authorities said it could bring heavy rain.

About 120,000 people in Mozambique have already been forced to evacuate their homes because of flooding in the Zambezi River.
