Also Friday, a lawyer for former banker Alexei Frenkel said his client was beaten by police after his arrest and has difficulty sitting.

Three Ukrainians have been charged with the contract killing of Andrei Kozlov, who died Sept. 14, the day after he was shot. Kozlov was the head of the Central Bank division involved in investigations of commercial banks, and had put several banks out of business during a campaign against money laundering.

Frenkel was reportedly chairman of the VIP Bank, which lost its license in June 2006 while under investigation by Kozlov.

A hearing for Frenkel that had been scheduled for Friday was put off until Monday at the request of the defense.
