Cuba frees famous dissident

HAVANA, Dec. 6 (UPI) -- In a surprise move Wednesday, Cuba has decided to release a well-known political dissident who has been imprisoned since 2003, the BBC reported.

Hector Palacios was arrested along with 75 other dissidents on charges of conspiracy and sentenced to 25 years in prison.

The 65-year-old Palacios said he was released because he suffers from heart disease.

Palacios was imprisoned among hundreds dissidents, many of whom were arrested for their involvement in the so-called Varela Project, which called for democratic reforms in Cuba.
