Nigerian president greets Prince Charles

ABUJA, Nigeria, Nov. 29 (UPI) -- Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo and other officials greeted Prince Charles of Britain at a state reception marking the future monarch's visit.

Charles, who previously visited Nigeria in 1990 and 1999, was greeted Tuesday at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport by British High Commissioner Richard Gozney and then proceeded to the reception prepared by Obasanjo at the State House banquet hall in Abuja, the BBC reported Wednesday.

The prince's visit, scheduled to last two days, is part of the royal's tour of West Africa aimed at promoting regional stability, sustainable development and national reconciliation. He is scheduled to visit remote villages and religious buildings where he is expected to meet with local tribal chiefs.

Nigeria, which had been ruled by the military for many years, adopted a civilian government in 1999. Religious and ethnic tensions in the country have been rising since then, the BBC said.
