The killings occurred in Shankapur, about 70 miles from Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh. The cause of the feud dates back to 1998, when Saghan Mishra killed the brother of Sriprakash Tiwari, residents of the village told the Express. They said Saghan received a life sentence but has been freed on parole.

Members of the other family hacked Saghan's first wife, his mother, a young daughter and two sons to death Friday. Saghan and his relatives then shot 10 members of the other clan.

"I have sent my 3-year-old son to a relative's house. I never thought they would kill children," Saghan's wife Kesh Kumari, said.
