G20 leaders to tackle climate change

MELBOURNE, Nov. 16 (UPI) -- Leaders of the world's biggest economies will discuss the issue of global warming at a summit meeting in Australia this weekend.

Australian Treasurer Peter Costello will chair the meeting in Melbourne of key finance ministers and central bank governors from 19 countries and the European Union, known as the G20.

Costello told the Australian Broadcasting Corp. the economic impact of climate change will be up for discussion.

"We'll be discussing the way in which countries get resource security and how it is priced, and the likely effect of carbon trading systems on pricing," he said.

A massive security operation has locked down much of Melbourne's central business district around the hotel where the conference is being held, in anticipation of the threat of demonstrations such as those that have disrupted G20 meetings in the past.

Costello says the G20 meeting will examine Australia's push for a new deal on the Kyoto protocol on reducing greenhouse gas emissions -- a major cause of global warming.
