DOHA, Qatar, Nov. 15 (UPI) -- The Arabic al-Jazeera television network based in Doha, Qatar, on Wednesday debuted its first English-language cable and satellite news service.

"This is unprecedented in the broadcasting industry -- no other international news channel has launched with such a high number of homes across the world," Khanfar said.

Since beginning Arabic programming on Nov. 1, 1996, al-Jazeera has also launched Web sites, including an English version, and executives said they intend for the network to become the "channel of reference for Middle East events."
