Many colleges dropping SAT

LEWISTON, Maine, Oct. 9 (UPI) -- A growing number of highly ranked liberal arts colleges are following Bates College in Lewiston, Maine, and dropping the SAT from the admissions process.

About one-fourth of the top-ranked schools by U.S. News and World Report, have dropped the Scholastic Aptitude Test and the similar ACT from admissions requirements, ABC News reported Monday.

"The SAT itself was not a fair indication of ability in all cases," said Elaine Tuggle Hansen, president of Bates, which dropped the test requirement 22 years ago.

"The SAT wasn't telling us about students who performed well on a variety of other measures," she told ABC News. "We wanted to look at all the information that comes in an admissions folder and really pick out the students who could make the most of this opportunity."

The changes follow a 20-year study by Bates college, which analyzed the performance of students who submitted SAT scores against those who did not take the test. The study found that the SAT test was unrelated to a student's success or failure in college, ABC News said.
