Australian PM upsets Muslims

SYDNEY, Sept. 1 (UPI) -- Australian Prime Minister John Howard has again urged all Muslims in Australia to speak English and embrace the nation's values.

Speaking on a radio talk-back program, Howard said there was a small section of the Muslim community that was unwilling to integrate and needed to do more to fit into the Australian community.

He later told reporters: "I've said generally of migrants who come to this country, no matter from where they've come, they have to integrate. That means speaking English as quickly as possible, embracing Australian values and it also means that, no matter what the culture of the country from which they came might have been, Australia requires women to be treated fairly and decently in the same fashion as men."

The chairman of the government's Muslim Advisory Group, Ameer Ali, said on a separate television program that Howard risked alienating Muslims by repeating his views.
