LIMA, Aug. 17 (UPI) -- A former Peruvian presidential hopeful was accused of human rights violations while commanding an anti-rebel unit in the 1990s, La Republica reported Thursday.
Ollanta Humala was said to have used undo force while leading a counter-insurgency against the Maoist Shining Path.

The former commander denied any wrongdoing. A judge must still review the prosecutor's report to determine whether Humala will face a formal indictment.
Humala lost the June presidential runoff against Alan Garcia.
