OLINDA, Brazil, June 19 (UPI) -- A Brazilian surfer was killed after a shark attacked him off the country's northern coast, O Globo reported Monday.
The 27-year-old Humberto Pessoa Batista was surfing off the coast of Olinda with a group of other surfers when the shark attacked him, O Globo said.

Pessoa was bitten in the leg and later died from his wounds.
Surfing is traditionally forbidden off the coast of many cities in northern Brazil due to the large concentration of sharks in the waters.
However local authorities recently lifted the ban because fewer sharks had been spotted in the area.
