ACLU may limit its own speech

NEW YORK, June 18 (UPI) -- Several board members of the American Civil Liberties Union are concerned over a proposal limiting their speech, The New York Times reported Sunday.

A comprehensive code of conduct has been proposed that would forbid board members from criticizing the organization's actions or policies.

Several board members refused to vote for the changes, saying they had already violated them several times, the newspaper said.

The issue raises the question of free speech and the embattled ACLU does not want to appear hypocritical, the Times said.

The measure has been tabled pending further discussion.

"Whether we call it a policy or not, this is a statement of what we stand for as the ACLU," Adrian White, an attorney for the New York office, told the Times.
