Bush builds Iraq momentum

WASHINGTON, June 14 (UPI) -- U.S. President George Bush Wednesday built momentum for his Iraq initiative, telling reporters in Washington Iraq's leaders have a plan to succeed.

Bush returned from a surprise trip to Baghdad in the wee hours Wednesday after meeting with Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki and his Cabinet and with U.S. troops.

Bush cited Maliki's plan to build the economy, secure international support and improve security, noting the massive security operation that began with his arrival in the Iraqi capital.

"Obviously the raids aren't going to end terrorism ... but we will strike their network, disrupt their operations and bring their leaders to justice," Bush said.

Bush said the U.S. Treasury Department will send experts to Iraq to help the government fix the economy. He said he reminded Maliki the Iraqi government the nation's oil belongs to the people and the government must be a good steward.

"I was impressed by the prime minister and I was impressed by his team," Bush said. "It's in our interests for Iraq to succeed. ... By helping this new government succeed we will be closer to completing our mission."
