British group scolds Serbia animal killing

BELGRADE, Serbia, June 8 (UPI) -- A British animal care organization threatens to press charges against Serbian auithorities for the mass killing of dogs and cats.

In a letter to Serbia's Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica, Britain's North Kent Animal Welfare society said it will act through British members at the European Parliament to consider pressing charges against those responsible in Serbia for killing animals, Novi Sad's 021 Radio reported Thursday.

Slobodan Jankovic, Serbia's state attorney recently asked district attorneys to advise him on the situation relating to reported killings of dogs and cats.

Orka, Belgrade's society for protection of animals, said criminal reports were submitted against the authorities in eight towns in Serbia, but no attorney has opened investigation as yet, Belgrade's B92 radio reported.

Authorities in Novi Sad, Serbia's second largest town north of Belgrade, said more than 4,000 dogs and cats were killed in the town area last year.
