Anti-Semitism seen as rising in France

PARIS, March 13 (UPI) -- The torture killing of a young Jew in Paris and three such attacks since are seen as signs of rising anti-Semitism among France's Muslims, says a report.

Police say the recent death of Ilan Halimi, whose body was dumped in a vacant lot, was followed last week by three attacks on Jews by Arab and African immigrants, reports the Boston Globe. None of the victims in the latest incidents was seriously injured.

"Anti-Semitism is rising in our country," said legislator Dominique Strauss-Kahn, the Globe reported.

"It's too bad this happened, because we immigrants are always blamed," said a Muslim, formerly from West Africa. "But Jews have all the money and power. Everyone knows this and resents them. That's why they have these problems."

In the case of Halimi, police believe many inhabitants of a housing project were aware a youth gang was holding a Jewish captive, but none called police or urged the abductors to show mercy.

Jewish leaders in France fear that in addition to Muslims, anti-Semitism is also growing among Caribbean islanders from former colonies and, to a lesser extent, poor white immigrants from other parts of Europe.
