African Union to decide on Darfur handover

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia, March 10 (UPI) -- The African Union is expected to decide soon whether to hand over its peacekeeping work in Sudan's war-ravaged Darfur region to the United Nations.

The decision will be made by AU's Peace and Security Council which is meeting in the Ethiopian capital of Addis Ababa, reports the BBC.

The handover to the United Nations has already been agreed in principle because the AU's 7,000-force has run out of funds. But Sudan strongly opposes the U.N. plan, and has threatened holy war against what it claims will be "re-colonization."
