COPENHAGEN, Denmark, March 8 (UPI) -- The much-vandalized Little Mermaid statue in Denmark has been struck again, this time as a message for Women's Rights Day.
Activists, apparently for women's rights, set a phallus in the hand of the statue in the middle of Copenhagen harbor.
The Little Mermaid, based on a beloved 1836 story by Hans Christian Andersen, is Copenhagen's biggest tourist attraction, but also a favorite target for vandals, the Copenhagen Post reported.
Over the years, the statue has had its head cut off, has been blown up and painted, and has served as the butt of many less destructive pranks.
In the latest incident, activists put a phallus in the statue's hand and covered it with green paint, apparently to mark International Women's Day, police said Wednesday.
"A message found at the scene indicates that this has something to do with Women's Rights Day," Detective Chief Inspector Frank Jensen told the Post. "Among other things, the date 8 March is underscored, so we're investigating the matter as politically motivated vandalism."
