Calif. gov. wants to waive fee increse

SACRAMENTO, Dec. 29 (UPI) -- Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger wants state lawmakers to cancel a hefty fee increase scheduled next year for the state's public colleges and universities.

The Los Angeles Times said the governor would use part of a projected $5.2-billion surplus to hold the line on the cost of attending college in California.

The proposal comes as Schwarzenegger is putting the final touches on the State of the State speech he will deliver next week and his 2006-07 budget, the newspaper said.

For students at University of California and California State University campuses, Schwarzenegger proposal would save CSU undergraduates $204 and UC students $492. Students in graduate programs would be spared a planned 10 percent fee increase for the year, the newspaper said.
