Rice, Merkel talk of CIA prisoners

BERLIN, Dec. 6 (UPI) -- German Chancellor Angela Merkel and U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice met in Berlin Tuesday and discussed secret CIA prisons in Europe.

At a news conference afterward, neither woman would give details of the talks but Merkel said democratic rules had to be adhered to while intelligence services also had to be able to do the job they were created for.

Reports that the United States transported terror suspects through Europe, and at secret CIA prisons there is set to dominate Rice's tour of Europe, the BBC said.

Rice said she would not discuss information that would compromise its operations, and she made no reference to secret detention facilities. Analysts told the Financial Times her statement amounted to a rejection of an EU request for information on which countries were involved.

Rice's trip is to include visits to Hungary, Ukraine and Belgium.
