Two U.S. congressmen hurt in Iraq crash

WASHINGTON, Nov. 28 (UPI) -- Two U.S. congressmen injured in a road accident in Iraq near Baghdad set off for home Monday from a military hospital in Germany.

Rep. Tim Murphy, R-Pa., was part of a three-man House delegation riding in a convoy to the Baghdad airport Saturday when the accident occurred, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported.

Their driver had to swerve off the road when an oncoming oil tanker appeared ready to hit them head-on, and their armored vehicle overturned.

Murphy said he suffered head and neck injuries, but his MRI did not show any nerve damage.

Rep. Ike Skelton, D-Mo., also received minor injuries, and he and Murphy were airlifted by helicopter to the U.S. Ibn Sina Hospital in Baghdad. A third member of Congress on the trip -- Rep Jim Marshall, D-Ga. -- was not injured.

The injured were flown to Landstuhl Medical Center in Germany for evaluation.

Skelton's press secretary, Lara Battles, told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, "All indications we have are that he's doing just fine."
