Frank Lloyd Wright house to be auctioned

OKEMOS, Mich., Nov. 25 (UPI) -- A Michigan house designed by architect Frank Lloyd Wright shortly before his death goes on the auction block next week.

The seller is the original owner, Don Schaberg, the Lansing State Journal reports. Wright designed the house for Schaberg and his wife in 1958.

"If the house sells, great. If it doesn't sell, great," Schaberg said. "l'll remain here."

The house is in the Usonian style, which Wright developed for houses that would be relatively affordable. Schaberg originally planned to build in Lansing but moved out to rural Okemos when Wright advised him to be 10 times as far from the city as he thought he should be.

The starting price for the auction is $595,000, although Schaberg has not designated an acceptable price. One Wright Web site values the house at $1.6 million.

Experts say that Wright houses can be hard to sell because each one is unique and no one is sure how to value living in the work of one of the greatest U.S. architects.
