Bush: U.N. should act on Syria

WASHINGTON, Oct. 22 (UPI) -- The United States and Britain called for immediate United Nations action after a report linked Syrian officials to the killing of a former Lebanese leader.

The U.N. report says former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri's motorcade was blown up Feb. 14 after he called for Syria to leave Lebanon. The report accused the brother and brother-in-law of the Syrian president, among others, of being involved.

President Bush Friday called the report "deeply disturbing" and demanded international action.

CNN reports Syria's U.N. ambassador, Fayssal Mekdad, called the report "too much politics and less concrete actions" and denied accusations Syrian officials misled investigators.

U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice called on the U.N. Security Council to hold those responsible for Hariri's death accountable.

The Security Council is expected to meet Tuesday with Detlev Mehlis, the German prosecutor who wrote the report.

In Birmingham, Ala., with Rice, British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw said Security Council action would be "standing up for justice."

Investigators say more information needs to be known about the 2,200-pound bomb that killed Hariri and 22 others. They also are calling on Syria to answer more detailed questions.
