Mubarak sworn in as president for 5th time

CAIRO, Sept. 27 (UPI) -- Hosni Mubarak was sworn in Tuesday as Egypt's president for the fifth consecutive six-year term after winning the country's first multi-candidate elections.

Mubarak, 78, promised in a speech before parliament following the taking of the oath to introduce the political and economic reforms that he had promised during his electoral campaign.

He urged both his followers and his opponents to assume their responsibilities in building the nation, stressing, "We should work hand in hand to ensure a strong, secure and modern Egypt."

"I hold out my hand to each and every Egyptian in order to build a better future and introduce constitutional and legislative reforms for continuing the process of democratization and liberating the economy," Mubarak said.

"We want to build a strong Egypt, not only strong with its security and army, but also with its democracy," Mubarak added.
