Lebanon: Israel violates air space

BEIRUT, Lebanon, July 4 (UPI) -- An Israeli surveillance plane allegedly stayed in Lebanese air space for more than three hours overnight as tension persisted over border clashes.

A Lebanese army statement said Monday the plane violated national air space shortly before midnight Sunday and flew over south Lebanon for 181 minutes before returning south towards Israel.

The plane did not draw anti-aircraft fire from army and Hezbollah gunners positioned in south Lebanon, the statement added.

Last week, a Hezbollah militant and an Israeli soldier were killed in border clashes that raised tension on the volatile Lebanese-Israeli border.

Lebanon alleges Israel has repeatedly violated its sovereignty since it pulled out its troops from south Lebanon in May 2000.

Lebanon regularly complains to the United Nations about recurring violations.
