New elections called for three Gaza areas

GAZA, May 30 (UPI) -- A Palestinian Authority official said Monday municipal elections will be rerun in certain Gaza areas where results were controversial.

Osama Abou Safiya, a member of the Highest Committee for Elections, told UPI new elections will take place Wednesday in the regions of Bureij, Beit Lahya and Rafah.

"The re-election will take place on time since we have not received any request from any party for postponement," Abou Safiya said. "All necessary preparations have being completed to renew the elections."

A Palestinian court canceled the results of elections in the three areas where Hamas won the majority of the seats. The ruling sparked a conflict between Hamas and Fatah, the backbone of the Palestinian Authority.

Hamas spokesman Sami Abou Zahri, in the meantime, cast doubt the new elections will go on as scheduled

"We fear that efforts are being deployed for postponing the elections which are scheduled on Wednesday," Abou Zahri said.

An Egyptian security team spent several days in Gaza last week in an attempt to settle the conflict over the elections.
