Rumsfeld in for long haul at Defense

WASHINGTON, May 11 (UPI) -- U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld continues to make long-term plans, suggesting he's far from finished with his second tour of duty.

Rumsfeld will be 73 in July and is five years into his second go-round as Defense secretary -- the first in 1975-1977 when he was the youngest person to hold the job, The New York Times said Wednesday.

"I don't think of myself as a short-timer," Rumsfeld told The Times.

The newspaper said Rumsfeld showed a list of accomplishments in revamping the Department of Defense, including realigning the geographic responsibilities of regional combat commanders, rewriting the country's nuclear strategy and addressing concerns of active-duty and reserve personnel to ease train on the Army and Marine Corps.

Rumsfeld is to appear before Congress this week to give a list of bases for closing. While base closings have been occurring since 1988, the latest round is part of Rumsfeld's overall program to remake U.S. military.
