Midwest is socked with unseasonable snow

CLEVELAND, April 24 (UPI) -- Parts of the Midwest were hit Passover weekend with a spring snow storm that dumped inches of heavy wet snow on parts of Michigan and Ohio.

The National Weather Service posted winter storm warnings for eastern Michigan and the Cleveland area in Ohio, predicting snowfalls of up to 5 inches. By late Sunday afternoon, the area east of Cleveland had been socked with 9 inches or more.

The warnings were to remain in place until 4 a.m. Monday.

The Cleveland Browns reported that the storm was a shock for the team's second-round draft pick. Brodney Pool of Oklahoma, who lives in Houston, said it was already 70 degrees when he left home Sunday morning at 6 a.m.

For the third-round pick, quarterback Charlie Frye, the trip was less traumatic, consisting of a 90-minute drive through the bad weather from Akron.

The NWS reported that snowfall totals varied sharply, with some areas getting little snow.

Travelers were warned that the snow could delay or even cancel flights, as well as bring down power lines and trees.
