Protesters storm Muslim vote event

LONDON, April 19 (UPI) -- Chanting protesters stormed a London mosque Tuesday to denounce Britain's foremost Muslim group for encouraging its members to vote.

About a dozen men believed to be members of the extremist group Al Muhajiroun, said voting was against Islam and would guarantee passage to hell.

Leaders of the Muslim Council of Britain, who were hosting the event at Regent's Park Mosque, tried to restore order but were drowned out by the protesters.

A lead speaker, who did not give his name, said: "The MCB is the mouthpiece for Tony Blair. The MCB can go to hell. Anyone who votes is kafir (an unbeliever)."

One protester threw a punch at MCB Secretary General Iqbal Sacranie, but he was not hurt.

Sacranie denounced the protesters, saying: "These people are a minute group with the loudest voice ... We must be aware of freak elements who have these views. I asked these people one question: is it part of Islam to behave in such a way? They did not answer me."
