EU eyes safeguards against China textiles

BRUSSELS, April 11 (UPI) -- The European Union's executive arm is contemplating whether to investigate options to halt a surge in cheap Chinese textile imports, EU Business reported.

The European textile industry has been pressuring the European Commission to require safeguards to curb the flood of Chinese imports after the 31-year-old quota system expires in January.

"We are currently studying the demands for safeguard measures," said Claude Veron-Reville, a spokeswoman for EU Trade Commissioner Peter Mandelson. "We would hope by then to be able to decide whether or not to open an investigation on safeguard measures."
