Gonzales: Anti-terror still top priority

WASHINGTON, Feb. 4 (UPI) -- Incoming Attorney General Alberto Gonzales told Justice Department employees Friday anti-terrorism efforts remain their top priority.

But Gonzales made a concession to civil libertarians concerned about possible civil rights abuses.

"Obviously, the president said the No. 1 priority for the department is to protect this country against future acts of terrorism -- and we will continue to make that our top priority," Gonzales said, "but will do so in a way that is always consistent with our values and consistent with our legal obligations."

Gonzales visited the main Justice Department building with his wife, Rebecca.

"My style of management is basically one of listening," he said. "I like to listen to people. I look forward to the opportunity to meet as many of you as I can during the weeks and months and years ahead, and listening to your ideas about what we can do to make this department even greater."

Gonzales, who was confirmed Thursday by the Senate, also praised his predecessor, outgoing Attorney General John Ashcroft.
