ATLANTA, Feb. 3 (UPI) -- The National Park Service says the Martin Luther King Center in Atlanta is in a state of disrepair and needs fixing.
The 24-year-old Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site, the final resting place of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., needs $11.6 million worth of work, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported Thursday.
The federal report said the center's archive building leaks, which could result in damage to King's papers and other important documents from the civil rights movement.
It said electrical boxes are rusted, exposing wiring and creating safety hazards.
The reflecting pool surrounding King's tomb also has some leakage, but the tomb itself does not appear to be threatened.
Frank Catroppa, superintendent of the center, said he noticed many of the problems last year and suggested the assessment be made. But he also said he was surprised at the extent of the problems.
The newspaper obtained a copy of the report through the Freedom of Information Act.
