Thousands mourn Mandela's son

QUNU, South Africa, Jan. 15 (UPI) -- The funeral of Nelson Mandela's son has attracted thousands of mourners in South Africa, the BBC reported Saturday.

South African President Thabo Mbeki and Archbishop Desmond Tutu were among the mourners at Friday's ceremony.

Makgatho Mandela died of AIDS earlier this month at 54-years-old. Mandela made the cause of his son's death public, challenging the region's taboo on openly discussing HIV/AIDS.

More than five million people are infected with HIV/AIDS in South Africa.
