US Air flight attendants approve cuts

PITTSBURGH, Jan. 5 (UPI) -- US Airways flight attendants overwhelmingly approved a nine percent pay cut as part of a management plan to save the bankrupt air carrier $94 million.

A total of 71.5 percent of the 5,800 eligible members of the Association of Flight Attendants voted, with 63.6 percent favoring what amounts to a third round of concessions.

US Airways Group filed for bankruptcy for the second time in two years in September.

"This was not easy," said Teddy Xidas, president of the Association of Flight Attendants US Airways Master Executive Council. "Our members have made tremendous sacrifices over the past several years. With this agreement, flight attendants have given everything they can give."

US Airways reached agreements with pilots, customer service and reservations agents earlier. A federal bankruptcy judge in Virginia was to rule Thursday on whether to abrogate a mechanics union contract if no agreement is reached.

Aviation experts expect a shakeout of U.S. airlines this year with No. 7 US Airways considered the most vulnerable to liquidation.
