Feds lay out case against former Ill. gov

CHICAGO, Jan. 5 (UPI) -- A federal judge has unsealed a 114-page document that details some of the evidence prosecutors have against former Illinois Gov. George Ryan.

The file outlines an alleged pattern of deep corruption in state government before and during the Republican's four-year term. Ryan was Illinois' secretary of state before he was elected governor in 1998.

Scott Falwell, one of Ryan's longtime aides, is cooperating with the Justice Department and is expected to testify against his former boss if the case comes to trial as scheduled in March.

Prosecutors say a trial could last six months.

Ryan, a former Kankakee, Ill., pharmacist, is not accused of trying to enrich himself. He is portrayed as an active participant in schemes to sell state government contracts and favors to benefit lobbyists, friends, associates and family.

Defense attorney Edward Genson said release of the 114-page document would make it harder to empanel an impartial jury in the cases of Ryan and close adviser Lawrence Warner.

"It's a pack of lies," said Genson.
