DENVER, Dec. 22 (UPI) -- Colorado public-health officials warned of the dangers of eating raw oysters after one person died and nine others were sickened by the bacterium vibrio.
"It's concerning because it's a severe illness. People who are at high risk should not eat raw oysters," Alicia Cronquist, an epidemiologist with the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, said, the Denver Post reported Wednesday.
An 81-year-old man in Arapahoe County died after eating raw oysters in a local restaurant. The most recent case involved a 67-year-old man who ate a seafood sauce in Tampa, Fla., between Dec. 2 and Dec. 8. He was hospitalized immediately upon his return to Colorado.
Symptoms of vibrio include diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, chills and fever.
