Wash. teacher in inmate pen pal scandal

TACOMA, Wash., Nov. 30 (UPI) -- A Washington teacher was put on paid leave for allegedly setting up as pen pals a female student and a former student in prison for killing a prostitute.

History teacher Dave Reynolds at Thomas Jefferson High School in Tacoma was put on paid leave after the mother of a 15-year-old student complained about correspondence between her daughter and Michael Koehler, who is jailed for stabbing a prostitute to death.

Koehler sent the student two letters, one in which he spoke of love and marriage and gave the girl a gang nickname, and another in which he talked about his sexual fantasies involving her, the Tacoma Tribune reported Tuesday.

"I am scared for my daughter for what he has said and wrote to her," the mother said in a court filing. "Please help me stop this."

The mother, whose name was not disclosed to protect her daughter's identity, said in a petition Reynolds told her the inmate was writing a book about the poor choices he made in his life and he could help children avoid similar mistakes.

School administrators are investigating, the newspaper said.
